Elementary / Classes / Kindergarten
Kindergarten provides an opportunity for students to acquire an array of important lifelong skills. During this year, students will develop and refine social skills, gain a strong foundation of literacy and numeracy concepts, as well as strengthening fine and gross motor skills. We will focus on developing all of these skills through the use of hands on, collaborative, and engaging activities. Students will also have a variety of special opportunities outside of our classrooms. This includes weekly classes such as music, art, physical education and STEM.
Our year end literacy goals include a mastery of letter names and sounds, phonemic awareness, blending and reading simple text. Students will be able to retell fiction and nonfiction text to demonstrate comprehension. Students will express thoughts and ideas in their writing using phonetic spelling, correct letter formation, and detailed illustrations. At the end of the year, it is our hope that students see themselves as authors, illustrators, and readers!
Our year end numeracy goals include a solid understanding of number sense. These concepts include one-to-one correspondence, identifying numbers represented in a variety of ways, writing numbers with correct formation from 0-20, counting to 100, addition and subtraction within 10, shapes by their attributes, and basic measurement concepts. At the end of the year, it is our hope that students see themselves as mathematicians through the exploration of these and many other mathematical concepts!
